One reference to Psalm chapter 19 CS Lewis made this statement he says I think I take this to be the greatest poem in all the Psalter and one of the greatest lyrics in the world is I take this to be the greatest poem in all the Psalter and all the Psalms and one of the greatest lyrics in the world that's is a pretty huge statement to make about one some about Psalm chapter 19 now why why do you say that because when you read through so this Psalm it seems like it should be almost two different Psalms because at verse six and seven there's an abrupt subject change that takes place and therefore there appears to be really no logical connection between the first six verses and the last eight verses but yet what we find is we have one psalm not two and in sharing his Billy why he believes this is the greatest poem in all the Psalms Lewis says I think he's speaking about David felt effortlessly and without reflecting on it so close a connection indeed such an identity between his first theme in his second that he passed from the one to the other without realizing he made any transition I agree with Lewis I think what he says his right that David felt this close connection between these two subjects God's Word in God's world and I believe the connection between these two themes is this is God is revealing himself in his purposes to all of humanity then what's happening in this psalm is God is giving us an understanding he's answering this question of how does he reveal himself and his purposes to all of humanity that's the question that he is answering here tonight and that's the connection between these two themes and so there's two real themes here this evening the first one is through his world how does God reveal himself and his purposes first it's through his world and verse one David says the heavens declare the glory of God and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands now when we hear the word heaven we tend to think of the place where God dwells or maybe we think of you know the place that we will be and maybe an image like this comes to our mind maybe not I don't know but it comes to my mind sometimes there's a guy who's in a diaper he's playing harpy's got some wings and we kind of think about heavens like this place we're gonna go we're gonna float on clouds of Charmin we're gonna get it get our wings we're gonna play harps for all of eternity and I don't know about you but that sounds really terrible to me that sounds like absolute misery not the wing part I kind of like that but everything else about it sounds horrible well thankfully that's not what Heaven's gonna be like that's not what heaven is going to be for us and David isn't talking about this type of heaven the place that we're gonna go for all of eternity that's not what he's speaking of here but when David uses the word heaven or the word heavens he is referring specifically to the skies above us the blue sky the Sun the clouds the sunrises sunsets the the night sky the bright moon or the trillions of stars in the sky this is what David is speaking about when he used the word heavens and in verse one David says this is what the heavens do they proclaim the glory of God or the expanse proclaims the work of his hands what does he mean what does he mean they clear the glory of God I'm sure most of us on some evening have been outside and watched as the Sun Goes Down you know as we see the Sun begin to steadily creep to the edge of the Rison and you see these colors the Reds and the oranges the yellows all blended together maybe something like this and you look at them and you see this beautiful sunset or the next picture here just these beautiful colors in the sky and your washes the Sun and get steadily lower and lower and you're just stunned by the brilliance of the colors they're just standing before you you're awestruck by the beauty of the colors and the sky colors so perfectly blended together then what you do is you get your phone out right or your camera and you take pictures in fact when it comes to sunrises I have friends who are photographers in fact my brother's a photographer and these guys they'll get up at like 4:30 in the morning just to go take pictures of the Sun rising to get up and to capture these images these beautiful images or have you ever been out of the country you know or in the mountains in the middle of the night there's darkness fills the sky but on this black canvas before are billions and billions of stars too many to count start our picture kind of like this just in a universe or the next one and yours looking before you all of these stars like sparkling diamonds in the sky shining so brightly and you should stand there just kind of it's a kind of breathtaking you're just amazed it's incredible you what splendor what beauty what just how awesome it is when you're looking at you think this is amazing this is miraculous marvelous a man named David Kornreich he's a assistant professor at Ithaca College in New York State he was basically estimating how many stars there are in the universe he roughly estimated there's about 10 trillion galaxies in the universe multiplying by the the Milky Way's estimated 100 billion stars resort resulted in this number behind me this number of one with 24 zeros behind it that's the estimated number of stars in the universe I don't even what that number is do you know I'll give you ten bucks if you can tell me now I'm joking I won't give you any money I don't got ten bucks to give you but it's mind-blowing or if you ever heard of the Whopper Sun it's a monster version of our Yellow Sun that's been found and it's the largest known member of the family of yellow stars which our Sun belongs to and the Whopper Sun emits light at similar wavelengths to our Sun but its diameter is listen 13 times or 1300 times larger this means what it would do is it would in golf the all the planets between mercury and Jupiter if placed the center of our solar system so you see right here this is the Whopper Sun HR five one seven one a it's a real fun name and then you have the Sun our Sun and Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter almost Saturn being engulfed by this what is called Whopper Sun I mean it's just ginormous and things like this exist out in the universe in October 2016 there's an article in science and based on Deep Field images from the Hubble Space Telescope that suggested there about two trillion galaxies in the observable universe that was ten times about ten times more galaxies than previously suggested that was just here in the last you know the last couple years ten true or two trillion galaxies I mean when you think about that when you think about the numbers of stars and the galaxies and Suns this size and you just think about how small we are how huge the universe is I had the privilege of going to the Creation Museum a number of years ago and at the Creation Museum there's a planetarium in fact the thing is one of the best our best planetariums in the maybe country released for sure in that area and we're laying back in this planetarium and we're traveling through you know the the universe and we're seeing Suns like the size of this whopper Sun and we're going into these different galaxies in these these observable areas and we're seeing this this these amazing pictures in the stars and the planets and the moons and everything that is going on around us and there's however many light-years away from us and I'm sitting there and I ended up falling asleep because it was actually a really nice place to lay back and it was dark and we've been walking around all day I promise you it was real inspiring it was Austrian but I was also really tired and so it's a great place to take a nap at the same time but when you hear about these things or you see things like this the beautiful sunrises and sunsets isn't it right for us to be amazed to think how awesome and magnificent that's the right response it's like that is that is marvelous that's incredible that is powerful but what David does is as he sees the experience these these the majesty of the heavens he makes it clear that the heavens do something they declare glory but not just mere glory it's not the creation of itself is glorious but what they do is they point to a glorious God that appoints to something far greater that would david does when he looks up during the day and he sees the sun in the clouds or at night when he sees you know the these stars the stone night sky and the bright shining moon and the trillions and trillions of stars lighting up the sky his conclusion was all of this pointed to the awesomeness of God the power of God the majesty of God in other words the heavens proclaim that God is real the creation proclaims that God exists the starry night sky the bright sunny shining Sun the beautiful colors found in a sunrise in our sunset the the planets and the galaxies point to one thing they have this clear consistent message there is a creator God and this is the principle that's something that has is created has a creator think about the building that we're in you don't just look at this building and think oh I just kind of appeared here over a thousands of years millions of years no you come to this conclusion the rational logical conclusion is of someone designed it in someone built it they put the blocks together people built this thing in the rational logical conclusion when we look at the created world is that there is a creator there's a maker of all these things in the creation is proclaiming this message that God is glorious that he exists that he is real and there's two aspects of God's revelation through the world I want to look at here quickly there's two aspects of God's revelation through the world the first aspect is this is through the world God's revelation is constant verse 2 says day after day they pour out speech and night after night they communicate knowledge the word pour out here is a strong Hebrew word to mean gush forth I mean it's a gush forth and I have a picture here if something is gushing forth I think of a fire hydrant that one got knocked off by a car and such gushing force sprang out into the sky that's the idea this is strong Hebrew word is pouring out it's gushing forth speech it's communicating knowledge and what it's communicating what david says in verse 2 as the heavens and all of creation are constantly pointing to or communicating that God is real there's a creator who made all of what we see in the heavens and the nature and the life that we see all around us and the heavens are there to constantly remind us that there is one who is greater than us more powerful than us more awesome than us more creative than us there is one who has made us I love what Spurgeon writes he says though all preachers on earth should grow silent and every human mouth cease from publishing the glory of God the heavens will never cease to declare and proclaim His Majesty in glory they are forever preaching for like an unbroken chain their message is delivered from day to day and from night to night it is constantly communicating God is real God is there over and over and David then goes on in verse 3 and says there is no speech there are no words their voice is not heard now that's kind of interesting because David just says they pour out speech so what is he saying well ain't clearly what David is getting at is that creation doesn't actually have a mouth like we do that's saying look look everyone God exists he is real for example you don't walk by the tree and the tree kind of goes out he says Luke God is real God exists you know that's not what happens and maybe in a movie or maybe if you're on something that might happen to you but that's what normally happens but rather just by their mere existence they're communicating constantly and what's interesting is this is there's no language barrier then see all of us have probably had an experience where someone comes up to you you know maybe they're trying to ask for directions somewhere and they're trying to speak to you but they have broken English or maybe don't know English at all and they're trying to ask you or trying to trying to communicate whatever it is they're asking to you and you're like I don't know I have no idea because there's this barrier here you don't speak their language they don't speak yours but see with creation there is no barrier there is no barrier the language is universal meaning every person can understand and this leads us to the second aspect is through the world God's revelation is comprehensive their message has gone out to the whole earth and their words to the ends of the world David gist very clearly makes the statement he just says it's communicated their message is communicated throughout the entire earth this message has reached to every nook and cranny of the earth and to establish his point he points to the Sun and he kind of uses poetic language here about the Sun he says in the heavens he has pitched a tent for the Sun it's like a bridegroom coming from its home it rejoices like an athlete running a course and heerd way David poetically describes that the night sky as this dwelling place or this tent for the Sun it's like it where is it where it goes to sleep at night obviously the Sun doesn't go to sleep but that's the imagery being used and it's like a bridegroom a bridegroom someone who's about to be married they're leaving their house what happens when you're leaving your house to get married you're excited at least I hope you are I hope so miserable life otherwise but you're excited and so he's like he's he's leaving to go meet his bride to get married or like a strong athlete running a race and the Sun is excitedly and powerfully making its course through the sky that every day was shrink and joy it comes out of its tent to cross the heavens to return back to it's 10:00 at night and then David makes the statement he says in verse 6 and it rises from one end of the heavens and circles to the other end nothing is hidden from its heat the Sun covers the entire sky its strength extends everywhere that its heat touches every part of the planet every corner of the planet and just as the Sun covers the entire sky and extends everywhere throughout the earth so does the glory of God so does the message that God is real and the Sun then powerfully and a powerful light communicates the clear extent and penetration of God's rule it is just everywhere as every person throughout all of time all of history can know this glorious God exists because of the glorious creation around it in the New Testament affirms the same idea when Paul writes in Romans chapter 1 he says for God's wrath was revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteous of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth since what can be made what can be known about God is evident among them because God has shown it to them so you can know things about gobby has got to shown it to you how well for his invisible attributes that is his divine or is eternal power and divine nature that there's a powerful God that's God he has been clearly seen since the creation of the world being understood through what has been made plus is making very clear that we can no we have no reason not to believe that God exists because of his creation and through the creative world we can understand certain truths about God that even apart from the Bible there's things we can know about God we can one know he exists we can to know he is powerful I mean to create the world the universe takes great power does it not and so all of creation is left all of humanity is left they have people without an excuse there's no excuse to say I didn't know God that you exist God that you are real because God is being revealed to us through his created world now there's a second way that the psalm talks about in which God reveals himself to the world or reveals himself to us and the second part is through his word it's through his word and David makes this abrupt shift like you look at verse six you look at verse seven like how in the world are these things even fit well the connection again is that God is he's communicating us how he's revealing himself to us and there's this shift from speaking about the creative world out is speaking to God's Word and one commentator said it is as if David said creation tells us much about God but his Word tells us much more as if David is saying creation tells us a lot of things about God and it does tell us certain things about God but yet his word tells us far more tells us far more in fact just like the Sun and David's mind being the most dominant feature of creation revealing the glorious God the word is God's dominant feature revealing more specific truth about who he is and even more specifically and clearly his purpose for your in my life this is what the Word of God does unlike creation which generally live reveals truths about God the existence of God the power of God his word is much more specific in fact many people would call the world in general revelation is in the Word of God his special revelation and this is what we find here in verses 7 through 9 and verses 7 through 9 there's six descriptions that Davis David gives us about the Word of God and there's six description in each description there's an effect that God's Word has on our personal life and the way David kind of breaks us down as he gives a noun and adjective and a verb don't worry if you don't know that those are doesn't really matter I'll just point them out here in a minute okay you're like I don't know I don't know well person placing thing now an adjective describes something verb action pretty good okay and something like that know if that's right I think that's right and what you find those in these descriptions is not just what's true about God's Word but it's also true what's true about God because this is written by God it can't be inconsistent with who he is it has to be consistent so the six descriptions now for the sake of time I'm doing three three of these descriptions I'm gonna do the first the third and the fifth the first one is this the three words instruction perfect renewing our life instruction perfect renewing your life for seven the instruction of the Lord is perfect renewing one's life the Hebrew word for instructions the word Torah which is the comprehensive term for God's revealed will in other words the Bible is God's revealed will for our life do you know that this is God's will for you you want to know what God's will is for your life it's right here in this book see God's Word not only communicates who he is but also communicates very clearly how we are to live and who we are and in his word God instructs us on how he wants to deal with things like conflict in our life how do you deal with conflict with another person in his word he reveals his will for how where to think about money and possessions and in this world he reveals how we're to treat our enemies someone that does something horrible to you and that hurts you and scars you how do you respond to that person you don't get revenge but you forgive and you love in his word reveals the purpose for our life the mission for our life which is to continue on the same mission that Jesus had when he was here which is to preach about the kingdom of God the gospel seeing men repent and coming to faith in Jesus Christ in his word it reveals how we're to think about church and community that church isn't just an event that we attend one time a week but really our life is to be given to committed to centered on a church community with other believers his word tells us reveals Howard the operator to live in regard to our government it gives us clarity about what type of person we are to Mary it instructs us how to think about Authority the list goes on and on and on and on God's Word or the Bible is his reviewed will for our life instructing us on how we ought to live as believers in Christ now david says about God's Word or about his will he says that his will is perfect and this word perfect is used oftentimes in the Old Testament in relationship to offering sacrifices to God sacrifices were to be perfect in other words they were to be without defect or without blemish you know you think about when you say a person's face oh man her face is perfect what are you saying you're saying her face doesn't have a blemish or defect on it right it's just clear smooth skin the Word of God has no blemishes God's will has no blemishes there's no defect there's nothing wrong with it it is perfect in every sense of the word it's right it's true and Peter says in 1st or 2nd Peter 1:3 says his divine power has given us everything required for life and God leads through the knowledge of him that his word has given us everything we need it's his will to us and what God's Word does is it renews a person's life it's what renews your life it's what makes you new it's what will change your life and not change your life from like a the the external behavior just kind of modifies your behaviors your actions but it changes you from the dairy very depths the very core of who you are in the heart level how well Paul tells us in Romans chapter 12 verse 2 he says don't be conformed to this age don't live like the world but be transformed that Ward is metamorphosis is where we get our word metamorphosis from it so the idea of becoming a caterpillar changing into a butterfly this transformation this major change happening how he says by the renewing of your mind but how is your mind renewed is it gonna be renewed as you watch you know stranger things on Netflix probably not your flesh already thinks that way isn't gonna be renewed as you look at the next you know social media feed probably not now unless it's one all about the Bible is it gonna be renewed if you're listening to secular me it's not that's not how your mind is renewed that just lives I just that just kind of promotes the fleshly thinking that just promotes the worldly thinking that we already understand so well but your mind is going to be renewed as you study and meditate in here and read listen to the Word of God it begins to rewire your mind and your thinking and here's what's the amazing thing is that as your mind is renewed meaning your mind I think is becoming more and more like that of God not that you become your be coming up but you begin to think like God here's what happens Paul says so that you may discern what is the good pleasing perfect will of God do you want to discern God's will for your life you will never understand God's will apart from God's word you won't and if you think you will you're gonna make some very scary decisions because then you'll adopt a philosophy that the philosophy is I just kind of look at my circumstances and I'm waiting from a sign from God or that circumstances presents itself in us and that must be from God because that's what I've always wanted her that is seemingly good but see if you want to understand God's will it starts with his word in his revealed will and as you walk in his revealed will and you take his word you get to apply it to the circumstances of your life you can better understand and discern what God's will is for any situation in your life you know the scriptures say just like David says Paul says that this will of God is perfect do you believe the God's plan for your life is perfect it's the best thing for you there's no other possible plan or way of living that is better they'll bring more joy to your life than God's will just think do I believe that because that's what the Scriptures teach second thing or the third of the six rather is the words our precepts right and giving us joy says the precepts of the Lord in verse eight are right making the heart glad now precepts are not word is not a word we probably use a whole lot going around talking about precepts they just simply mean rules principles or commands and God's Word is filled with all of these it's full of rules and principles and commands the Bible's full of commands right there's 56 commands just on how we're to treat one another known as the one in another commands like love one another forgive one another pray for one another like there's all kinds of instruction in the Bible and some of us we understand that we know that pretty clearly you open up any page in that especially the New Testament you're gonna find instructions you're gonna find rules principles and commands therefore what we find behind or we find a way find behind the word precept is there's this there's this precision and authority in which God addresses us the God has given us very clear instructions about how to live our life they're very precise I was just thinking about this idea of precision this week this week I was visiting my brother from our church who he had his detached retina and so he had to go and have surgery to have his retina read here and what he said he was explaining the procedure and if something about how the doctor had this like laser on his forehead and he would use it and they're moving the eye around I know how you do that but and he's using this laser to just carefully reattach the retina to his eye there's just precision accuracy that's what God's Word is like and David says these commands they're right they're morally practically right in all times in all places and because they are right David says when you obey them what you will experience is a joy-filled heart you will be so happy do you know why so many people aren't happy so many Christians aren't happy just cuz they fail to walk in obedience the Word of God it's because we fail to live rightly we fail to live in a way that lines up with the right Word of God often times were living in opposition to it now I'm not saying that we're gonna be perfect but there's clearly times in life when we know we look at our life it's like we're just blatantly walking in disobedience to the Lord and that produces suffering david writes in psalm 119 a great parallel to Psalm 19 about the Word of God he says how happy are those whose ways way is blameless who walk according to the Lord's instruction happy are those who keep his decree and seek him with all their heart they do nothing wrong they walk in his ways you've commanded that your precepts be kept diligently there's great joy david says in just obeying God but then he writes in verse 5 if only my ways were committed to keeping your statutes then I would not be ashamed when I think about all your commands and David is just lamenting on what we feel is well that often times we just see how our life falls short and thanks be to God for His Son Jesus who saves us and redeems us but just very practically the reason why there's so much shame in pain and so many people's lives if you just think about your own life it's probably because there isn't actual obedience to the Word of God in a particular area of your life but when we obey God's Word because what his word is right it's true it always aligns with reality it's a living like God and God is whole and he's full of joy we too will be full of joy we'll be happy ecstatic people the first the fifth thing of the sixth or the third I guess you'd say but number five in my outline is this is fear of the Lord pure enduring forever it says in verse nine the fear of the Lord is pure enduring forever now you may wonder and I wonder why does David in talking about the scripture talk about the fear of the Lord in fact it would seem to me the David is calling the scripture the fear of the Lord why why is he doing that potentially why is he making this statement well here's what I think this is why I think he what do you think he's doing here it's because the Word of God is deeply connected to the AH and majesty of God the Word of God is deeply connected to the AH and majesty of God in other words if you want to stand in awe of God if you want to have the appropriate appreciation for God if you want to marvel at him then one of the primary ways to do so or the way that this will happen is as you sit under the Word of God as you read it and hear it and study it this is how you become awestruck by God and in all reality that I think this is why so many of us as believers in Christ we don't find ourselves in awe of God that's because we don't have a regular diet of God's Word in our life we're not awestruck by him we're not amazed by him because we don't sit and read his word and see throughout all of history the amazing things that God has done and to be awed by God we have to see we have to hear what he has done you know the Thanksgiving Day I was I jumped up on YouTube for I don't know what reason I just got on YouTube and I looked at the trending videos on Thanksgiving Day and on the trending videos there's this video of a guy who I think he's a a like a hot dog eating champion skinny dude and what he is doing on this video is he is gonna eat he ate 10 and a half pounds of Thanksgiving food so we got this giant plate like a platter obviously put the biggest mound of mashed potatoes like volcano style and putting the gravy and there the gravies coming down the side he has both drumsticks of the of the turkey he has this giant plaid of food any eight ten and a half pounds in 46 minutes in 46 minutes and I washed every 46 minutes gotcha no no no I would have done that I don't think they sped up the video so you're but he's eating this entire pumpkin pie he just takes the pie out of the tin and it starts eating it it's pretty cool did they do fast for just like just chowing it down it's like this stuff is just gone so quick and you're sitting at this I'm showing it to my kids my kids are coming over my wife's looking at it my brother's girlfriends looking at it and we're just sitting here like a maze like we're like half disgusted right cuz he's needing ten F pounds of food but yeah we're also sitting here like in just amazement in awe like oh my goodness why it's a great question I don't have an answer to that no because you're seeing it it's like I'm seeing your scent you're seeing what's going on and there's something about sitting in the Word of God and you read and you read the Old Testament stories you read about the exodus of Israel in the Red Sea parting you read about the plagues in Egypt how God rescues his people Egypt there are people from the Egyptians the most powerful nation in the world and you can't help if you really sit there and think about it to be awestruck by God I think God is so powerful he is so mighty you see the Word of God teaches us to fear God it teaches to sit there thing holy cow this is who God is and that will affect your soul that will affect how you think about life that will affect every decision if every day you can sit under the Word of God and find yourself in all of him fearing him that will change and Davis says that this word is peer or clean it's perfect and it endures forever you're gonna die the grass is gonna die metal is gonna corrode things are gonna fade away but the old and new Testament are very clear God's Word will never fade away in fact Peter says in first Peter 1:24 for all the flesh is like grass and all the glory like the flower of the grass the grass withers and the flower falls but the word of the Lord endures for ever it'll never it'll never curled like a piece of metal it'll never fade away like a picture it will never diminish due to any impurity because there is no impurity found in it it is pure it is clean because it's written by so to speak but God who is pure and clean and holy this is what we have before us the enduring everlasting Word of God and our fingertips all the time now what David does is he moves from his description or the characteristics of the Word of God and he provides us with the attitude his attitude towards the Word of God which is found in verse 10 primarily verse 10 it says they the Scriptures are more desirable than gold than abundance of pure gold and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb and David points out two valuable commodities in the ancient world gold and honey gold is still very much a valuable commodity here today honey we would not think so I think of as so much but golden honey were very valuable commodities at that point in time and you think about gold or having lots of money you can get all kinds of things right it's like you can go on you know Black Friday and buy whatever you want if you have billions of dollars fact you don't even care about but about back from about about Black Friday deals if I can say the word jeez Louise you can't even care about it money can get you so many things and David had lots of money you did he was rich David had all kinds of money but what David says is that there's something more valuable than money it's gold it's not gold it's God's Word I'm sorry I misspoke it's the Word of God I don't have to edit that and he points them to honey and you've had honey it's sweet right especially at this time you know in this age I didn't have you know Mountain Dew and I didn't have you know whatever other kinds of Monster energy drinks and all kinds of things that were sweet it's like honey was sweet to the palate it still is you think about honey being sweet to pal it almost like it's like they was talking about pleasure and experiences and sensual pleasures and David says the Word of God it's sweeter than any experience I could ever have it's sweeter than any sexual pleasure I could ever experience I bet it's a pretty crazy statement it's more valuable than gold it's greater than any experience I could ever have it's better than any amount of wealth and amount of possessions any pleasures I could ever go through why well because God's Word offers you what no amount of money or pleasure could ever give you God's Word offers you something that no amount of money no matter wealth amount of possessions could ever give you no experience no matter how high the experiences could give you verse 11 david says what God's Word doesn't like wealth or pleasure 1 is this is it warns you david says in addition your servant is warned by them instead of God's Word as it does is it warns you it's like this giant sign that says watch out if you keep going this way there's a cliff you're gonna fall off it warns you for your your best interest and you know what it warns you about many things you know - the things that weren't you about money and pleasure money and pleasure - things that drive the human heart but that separate us from the Living God money and pleasure what are most people living for in life what drives them possessions and pleasure and then fame three things that John talks bought in the first John it's the lust of the world of us the flaw the lust of the flesh and the pride fall eyes of life is just this boasting this famous fortune we think that we're better we get notoriety and we're after these things we're after wealth and pleasure but this is what Paul says to Timothy but those of you who want to be rich fall into temptation a trap in 1st Timothy 6 and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil listen to this for the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil and by craving it some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs the lure and enticement of money has actually pulled people away from God the desire for wealth has plunged people into all kinds of ruin in destruction that's why you find people who are so rich yet who are so depressed just go look at Hollywood it's full of it and all I would never wish to be those people all kinds of riches all kinds of pleasure all kinds of Fame and yet so empty inside see God's Word is warning you but the temptations of this life that you are going to pursue but they will just turn to gravel in your mouth there's no satisfaction there's no happiness in them but if you will obey God's Word and if you will treasure God's word this is what David says and in keeping them there is an abundant reward not just a reward an abundant reward a full reward he says the key to this a reward that the key to unlock this door to get this abundant reward is obedience to the Word of God david says by keeping in keeping them or in other words obeying them is how you unlock this abundant reward and truly the reward is abundant because there are so many blessings that come from obeying God's Word so many blessings I'm just a peace of mind but yet one of the greatest blessings probably the greatest blessing the greatest reward is this is that you can intimately know God you can know your Creator in an intimate way and John 14 Jesus and the Last Supper is speaking with the disciples and he tells them the one who has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me the one who loves me will will be loved by my father and listen to this I also will love him and will reveal myself to him two verses later he says if anyone loves me he will keep my word and my father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him and it isn't this what the Word of God is all about isn't this what the scripture is all about it's about a relationship with God I mean John chapter 1 John is so clear in the beginning was the word in the Word was with God and the Word was God and then verse 14 he says and the word became flesh and dwelt among us who is the word it's Jesus and see when you obey the word of God it's the key to opening up this intimate relationship with God into treasure the word is the treasure Jesus into treasure Jesus to treasure the word in the Word of God it's all about a relationship and this is so important because some of us we look at the Bible we think is just about rules about all the do's and the do nots they're all the things I have to do all the things I can't do this is this rules and regulations that's how some of us approach the Word of God and so we have no desire for it there's no wanting or willingness to treasure in to delight in it because we have a wrong perspective when it comes to it we think this is just what's gonna keep me from having any fun I don't want to read it it's just one of Titus it's gonna tell me what I can't do or what I have to do and I don't want to love that person that guy is annoying instead of looking at it and say no no no the word is Jesus and it's about a relationship with Jesus and I get to open up this word and I get read and I get to put this stuff into practice in my life because in doing so I get to have a more intimate relationship with Jesus that's the reward and that relationship will be realized in its fullness not here but in heaven we come into perfect relationship with God so what does David's attitude what does David's attitude what attitude should we have towards the Word of God well the Word of God is to be more desire there's a greater value than riches or experiences the idea is I need this book in my life more than I need wealth is wealth or pleasures of this world I need to treasure this book because in treasuring this book I'm treasuring my relationship with Christ and a treasure my relationship with Christ means I need treasure this book I need to spend time in it and know it and study it let me ask you how do you think about the Word of God not in a condemning what just how do you think about the Bible it isn't a guilt trip it's just a simple question just to get us to think do you look at it like David does that's greater than any possession it's greater than any TV show I can watch it's greater than any movie I could watch any book I could read any conversation I could have another person this stands head and shoulders above it all I pray that that becomes our attitude then we would find ourselves delighting more and more in the Word of God because the Word of God is drawing us into a deeper relationship with our Creator God so the question becomes this what is David's response towards the revelation of God through his world and through his word what is his response there's three responses I'm gonna run through these quickly because I'm running out of time but I think there's three responses David has primarily probably to the Word of God is he's thinking through God's Word and he's reflecting on what God's Word is the first one is there's a prayer for cleansing verse 12 who perceives his unintentional sins cleanse me from my hidden and there's just the sense this is the light of the Sun the heat of the Sun reaches every part of the earth the Word of God is we read it as we process it as we meditate on it reaches down into the deepest crevices in our heart of our heart and it begins to expose us Hebrews 4:12 makes it very clear it's able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart the truth is when we begin to look at God's Word it begins to bring to the reality to bring to light just who we are and it begins to bear there's a light that's being shined upon our soul and we begin to just see the depths to which the sin goes and part of what happens when we study God's Word is begin to realize that there's sin that I have committed I'd even realized I committed there's attitudes that I've had that have been wrong there's sin that I've committed I've just forgotten about I think what Dave is talking about these hidden faults and David's response as he begins to look at God's Word as he begins to understand the depth of his sin his prayer to God his God cleanse me cleanse me from it how can we not stand before a holy God and just say God please please take away the impurity and perfection in my life make me holy like you are holy secondly as David prays a prayer to be kept from sin he says moreover keep your servant from willful sins do not let them rule me it's not only as their desire to be cleansed from sin to sin the hidden faults of things does even know about but there's also desire to be kept from willful willful sin open rebellion to God he says don't let them rule over me don't let me be enslaved to sin under the control of sin to be living under sin that there's the thing that the very thing that will pull me away from you now I don't want to be disconnected from you so there's a prayer to be kept from Synanon lastly there's a prayer of acceptance is may the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable to you O Lord my rock and my Redeemer in this word acceptable it's a word that goes in connection with sacrifices and this idea when some would offer a sacrifice the hope is that it's a an acceptable sacrifice and exact tries to be accepted by God this is an acceptable act of worship to God and take seven David's saying may the meditation of my heart and the words of my mouth be acceptable to you God but it's interesting because David already exposes the fact that there is sin in his life and sin separates us from from God so how does David how do we become acceptable to God well the key here is that God is our Redeemer see David view God as his Redeemer the one who cleansed him from sin to make him acceptable to God and see the way that we become acceptable to God is not by our actions behaviors our attitudes our desires our words but it's through the Redeemer Jesus Christ the through Jesus we have been redeemed the third Jesus Christ what we've been made as we've made whole we may appear we've been given his righteousness so that we stand position before God as righteous holy blameless acceptable to God and so our life becomes as acceptable offering to God where our life in a sense becomes as they got it take my life in view of the fact of what you have done for me I just want to give my life to you and the desire of our heart as we see that it's through that through Christ himself that cleanses us that makes us whole that makes it acceptable we say God just take my life may my a life Lord just be given to you and I think this is part of what's going on in David's heart is there's really just a surrender of him to God it's a giving of himself to the Lord because of what who he understands God to be and what his word has done in his soul so in closing I just encourage you in two things one is take time to view the created world around you just stop and look at what God has made it is healthy for us just to sometimes get out get out of kind of the hustle and bustle of life and out into just a the country or whatever or taking a vacation you just stop and you look at what God has done just meditate on the created world around you secondly treasure the Word of God David clearly treasures his word in part because he understands it's about relationship and when we when we I think take a moment and take time to meditate on what God has done in the world around us and we take his word and we treasure it we read it we obey we begin to know God and then we'll stand in awe of God and will respond rightly to God we'll live rightly before him if we just take to heart who he is what he's done is we sit before him particularly in his word he'll change our hearts and give us a right perspective on who God is and who we are as his people let's pray father I'm so grateful Lord this is we've passed Thanksgiving God we just want to say we are so grateful well we shouldn't just be grateful one time a year Lord but really every day we have to be grateful to be thankful and we are thankful God because of what you've done for us what do you have revealed yourself so clearly to us through your world and through your word they got all we can do is stand before you and say Lord my life is yours what are the response is there what are the right response is there or do you are our maker you are our Creator and you have every right to do what you want with us and yet in your mercy you have redeemed us and you've purchased us you've saved us from the punishment of our own sin and so Lord we thank you for the grace that you've extended to us and the salvation that we have in Jesus Christ and we just pray I pray Lord I pray that your reward would sink down deep into our heart and we'd be people who stand in awe of you how do we see your word not as just rules and regulations father but a relationship an opportunity for us to get to know you God in a greater more intimate way we pray these things Jesus in your name amen.
