How does our joy in confidence in God grow how do we move from a place of despair to a place of great confidence in God if you look at verses 8 & 9 this is towards the end of the psalm this is what it says it says I always let the Lord guide me because he's at my right hand I will not be shaken therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices my body also rests securely and so by the end of the psalm David is in a place of great confidence in joy in God and I think each one of us wants to be there in our relationship with God I think deep down each one of us wants to have great confidence in joy in Christ the problem is that life happens that there are all kinds of situations we find ourselves in where our soul is in turmoil we can be confused or we can be disappointed our heart can be broken we can be in a place of despair and it can be very challenging to find our joy and confidence in God and this is how Psalm 16 begins verse 1 says this protect me God for I take refuge in you and so the psalm begins with David in a place of but David in a place of discouragement and uncertainty and none of us like to be uncertain and none of us like to feel vulnerable none of us like to be afraid but what we see throughout the course of the psalm is that David moves from a place of despair it's a great joy and confidence in God and so the question is how do we do that how do we walk that road how do we how do we move from a place of discouragement to a place of great confidence in God but Before we jump into Psalm 16 there's one quick observation I want to make that I think will be helpful as we work our way through Psalm 16 and here's the observation and said if you live long enough you will find yourself in many difficult situations it seems so simple but I think we have to factor this in as we dive into Psalm 16 that if you live long enough you will find yourself in many do cult situations if you plan to live until you're 60 70 80 90 100 years old you will find yourself in situations that you never imagined being in you'll find yourself in a situation where your plan has gone off the road and you are now in the forest trying to figure out how to get out the fact is that life is quite unpredictable this week I was reading a number of stories about people who found themselves in very unpredictable situations I'm going to share a few of them with you just to kind of get your mind going and the first one is of a man who went out and one of his dreams is to go hunting in Africa for some wild animals and one morning he was sitting in his tent and he was reading a book and he had a unwelcomed guest and here's the here's the picture it's a picture of a man who is looking face to face with a 600-pound lion and what's kind of interesting is that this guy has a high-powered rifle right to the left of him but the lion is in between him and the rifle now I hope this man was wearing a diaper otherwise he probably ruined his pants there but if you look at his face you're just he wasn't expecting this this is not part of the plan or there is a woman in South America she went out for a walk like she had many many times just to get some exercise and as she walked under a tree there was a porcupine that fell out of the tree and landed directly on her head and so here's a picture of this woman she had 270 quills that they had to pull out of her scalp that is a bad day that wasn't her plan and or I was reading the story of a simple selfie I don't know if you heard about this I hadn't heard about it until this week but there was this thing that went viral where you would take a selfie with a camel did you hear this a few years ago and so here's a picture this is who made it famous is that there's a group of guys with this camel who's smiling and and so then people are like yes camels are awesome let's take pictures of camels and so here's another picture of the camel or another one with the camel but there's this young woman who tried to get in on the trend and it didn't go as planned and so here's a picture of this one we got we've got bit by the camel in her face and so that's not part of the plan and the the reason I show you this is just to prove a very simple point that life doesn't go according to your plans and one of the main reasons we find confidence in our lives I think if we're honest is that we consider ourselves to be good planners what we think through our life and we say yeah we got a plan for this and this and this and this and if we're honest that's really our source of confidence but if that is your source of confidence eventually your plan will fail you what life will teach you that your plan will fail you that doesn't mean we shouldn't plan it just means we shouldn't hope in our plan that should not be our source of confidence moving forward in life and so life is quite unpredictable and at the same time life is very predictable there are elements of life that are very predictable there are things that happen over and over and over again the problems that oftentimes we don't think they'll happen to us and so over the course of the last couple of months I've had a lot of conversations with people in the church and I'm just gonna share with you some things that are happening in the church the people in our church are dealing with one is that your single way longer than you thought you would be this is causing turmoil your significant other unexpectedly breaks up with you or cheats on you my marriage is much harder than you thought raising kids is much more demanding than you thought you feel lonely even though you're surrounded by people you don't feel close with anyone you maybe lost your job and you're unsure of how you're gonna pay your bills you're in financial trouble your good friend just walked away from the Lord your child gets cancer you get cancer your friend gets cancer your parent one of your parents gets cancer sin is overwhelming your life that you're fighting you feel like you're fighting but you're being overwhelmed by your sinful desires or obedience may your heart shake there's something you know that the Lord wants you to do and on the inside it makes you shake and you don't want to do it these are all just conversations and I have another 50 we could go through just about what's happening in life and these things if you look at them I mean they're fairly predictable the point is that life is unpredictable in many ways and in many ways it's quite predictable and if our expectation of following Christ is that we're gonna follow Christ as long as things go well but when things go bad it's okay to kind of fall off the wagon that is not a very good plan but I think if by God's grace you can learn to find your joy and your confidence in Christ in the face of your trouble you will live a very powerful fruitful life in the kingdom of God you will live a life that will abound to the glory of God and you will be free you will be free you'll know God in a way that will bring such joy to your heart and if you don't if you don't learn to find your joy and confidence in God life is just gonna throw you for many many loops you know I think so many of our hang-ups in life if you trace them back to what's going on so many of our hang-ups that are so destructive in our life they come out of a thirsty heart that is looking for something to quench our thirst and so we drink from poisonous Wells what we're searching for joy and confidence and all kinds of things that will not give us real joy in confidence where we haven't learned how to move from a position of weakness to strength in God and so we're trying to find life and joy and confidence and comfort and all these different things I mean think about smoking cigarettes well I mean what is going on when someone is smoking cigarettes what's happening is that they're trying to find a sense of comfort a sense of stability or we think about marijuana what's going on with marijuana the same things happening or drinking alcohol alcohol is an attempt to find some security some comfort some pleasure to ease the aching of our souls so oftentimes that's going that's what's going on I was recently talking to a man who struggles with alcohol and we're going through it and he had a smirk on his face and he said Dan this is what he said alcohol may be man's worst enemy and I said he may be right that might be right then he got a bigger smile and he said but Jesus says to love your enemy that's why I drink that's pretty good I don't know what to say to that you got me but think about it what's going on in someone's heart when they've just consumed their ninth beer think about that what's going on something's going on in that soul or when someone uses drugs or think about what's happening with pornography pornography is a pleasure seeking stress-relieving activity that's why you look at porn it's a pleasure seeking stress-relieving activity but it doesn't accomplish the purpose or Netflix binges what's going on perpetual dating you always have to be with someone video games what's going on with video games not a casual playing of video games but this I got a play what what's going on there it's it's a thirsty heart that's drinking from polluted wells and it comes because we have not learned yet learned how to find our joy and confidence in God those things are like medication for our soul and Psalm 16 is saying this there's a better way to live there's a much better way to live there's a way of life that will really set you free there's a way of life that will produce a greater joy in God and this is what David does David moves through that path and so again the question is how does our joy and confidence in God grow if you want your joy and confidence in God to grow what do you do well here's the principle the principle is this is that you must continually set the Lord before you you must continually set the Lord before you verse 8 says I have set the Lord always before me because he's at my right hand I shall not be shaken now verse eight is just full of insight I mean it's amazing when I when I when I was studying this passage I just kept stopping at verse eight over and over again because there's so much insight here and what verse eight does is it highlights three principles very important principles number one is this is at challenging situations tend to make us functionally forgetful challenging situations tend to make us functionally forgetful you get bad news you feel rejected by your friends you're not doing very well in school you're not doing as well as you want with your job whatever it is disappointment it tends to make us functionally forgetful now what does it mean what does functional forgetfulness mean well it means two things that means two things or when we say the word forgetful what does it mean it means two things first the first way we use the word forgetful it's when information has been deleted from our minds or maybe it's maybe it's down in there deep but we can not we can no longer recall information in our minds so for example if I did a weird thing and I made you repeat a number I'm not going to do that but let's just pretend this is the number one eight two I just made this up one eight two seven three seven one three two three now if I was like okay guys repeat with me repeat after me ten times in a row and my guess is that by the end most of us would be able to say one eight two seven three seven one three two three but then let's pretend six months from now you don't do anything with that number and I say hey guys do you remember that number now maybe a few of you weirdos would remember that number but oh the overwhelming majority of you would have no idea what the number was you would you wouldn't be able to recall it and so you would say I forgot it I don't remember it I can't remember it but whenever the Bible talks about forgetting it almost never talks about forgetfulness in this way the Bible almost never talks about people forgetting or information has been deleted from their minds so there's another way to understand forgetful what it means to be forgetful or to forget something and that's when you fail to include information and how you make decisions that you have a decision-making process and you fail to include some factor in the way you make decisions let me give you an example of this a number of years ago my wife and I we bought a nice used crib at a garage sale and we bought it because we were having twins Rex and Maya they're on there on the way and Quinn was still kind of in his crib thing we said this gets something different and so we bought this rocking crib wooden crib at a garage sale it was really nice and Rex and mild they were born we put him in there that's where they slept special place it's great and so then what happened was we were gonna move so we're moving to a new house Rex and mial had kind of grown out of it so we said let's move a bunch of stuff to my parents house while we're selling the house sell the house get to our new house set up our new house go get the stuff for my parents house and so that had all happened may at this time was pregnant with Titan and so it may goes let's go get that crib and so great so we went out on a date and we went to my parents house we got the nice wooden crib but it was too big to put it in the van and so we strapped it to the top of the van that's what we do and then we go out to dinner and we just had a jolly good night it was just wonderful to be together and then we're driving home and as I turned down my street we're just driving like normal I get close to my house I hit the garage door button and I had done this hundreds of times and I just go into drive into my garage and as the nose of the van goes in I hear crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch crunch and so I immediately stopped and I stopped and I think to myself okay that was the crib our special crib and I'm thinking to myself is it salvageable like is there any way possible that we can salvage this crib and so I got out first and looked and it wasn't pretty it was like a crib murder scene that's what it was it's like it was it had exploded and I ran it underneath the the garage door so I was up against the roof and so when it exploded it like broke into all these pieces into the garage door so it's like sticking out of the I mean it's just totally it was terrible and so and so may gets out and she handled it and great like a like a champ but what happened there what happened this is what I said I forgot I forgot that the crib was on top but what did I mean this is what I meant what I meant is that as I was going to drive into the garage I did not factor in the information that I have a crib a precious wooden rocking crib on top of the van I didn't factor that in so what I did is I ran it right into the garage and destroyed it broke Meg's dreams for that night at least it was terrible I felt very bad but anyways okay I've moved past it but the the the point is that it's it was destroyed because I forgot it and I believe that when you get rocked when your life moves in a direction you weren't planning it tends to make you functionally forgetful which moves on to the second principle here's the second principle functional forgetfulness is at the heart of spiritual dysfunction why are people spiritually dysfunctional why why is it that people stopped growing and developing spiritually what's going on second Peter 1 says the more you grow like this the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord you in our Lord of our Lord Jesus Christ so what's happening is that is that some people they come to faith in Christ they're growing in their knowledge of God and they're just growing up spiritually they're fruitful and they're useful in the kingdom of God that's what it says you'll be the more productive and useful you'll be in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and he says but those who fail to develop and this way are short-sighted or blind forgetting they've been cleansed from their own from their old sins now what does he mean if you were to ask those people have you been forgiven of your sins they would say of course how dare you even ask that question of course I've been forgiven so he doesn't mean information has been deleted what he means is this as he means that the fact that your sins have been forgiven does not influence what you do tonight you see what I'm saying that that information is not included in your decision-making process about what you're gonna do tonight and it won't be factored into your decision-making process and what you're gonna do tomorrow or the next day or the next day or the next day you have forgotten it that's what he says that's why people don't develop spiritually they forget they they know they know the the crib is on top but they don't factor it into the way that they live and so they just run into things all the time what's the problem that they have forgotten things that they already knew Hebrews chapter 2 says for this reason we must pay attention all the more to what we have heard so that we will not drift away now look at the look what's happening here he he doesn't say the reason people drift away is because they stopped learning new things if you end up walking away from the Lord it will not be because you stopped learning new things it's that things that you already know are no longer special to you if you do if you walk away from the Lord it it won't be because you've stopped learning new things it's because the reality that the Holy Spirit lives in you no longer moves you the reality that God loves you that he sent his son to die for you doesn't move you it doesn't impact you it's not considered that's old stuff for this reason we must pay attention all the more to what we've already heard or to what we have heard so that we will not drift away I have never in my life ever had someone who is walking with Christ they come up to me and this is what they say no one's ever said this to me you know Dan I've been studying the ancient biblical manuscripts that in the Greek in the Hebrew and what I've learned is that there seemed to be some discrepancies in the manuscripts and I don't believe that there's enough evidence for me to continue to give my life to Christ therefore I'm renouncing my faith in Jesus nobody does that what you do is you drift you drift that the things that once were special to you about the grace of God no longer move you you don't include them in the way you treat your spouse you don't include them in the way you treat your roommate you don't include them in the way you think about your money or your friendships it's just I know I know I now that that's what people I know Jesus died that's what you sound like to me it's like just included in your decisions just factor it into what you're doing and so what happens is you begin to drift you're like a boat in the ocean with no anchor drift and then you end up in a place you didn't intend to go I've just watched I mean it's like clockwork I can just it's just this is what's happening that's it you're drifting no I'm not I know that it's like no it doesn't impact you Samuel Johnson 18th century British writer said this people need to be reminded more than they need to be instructed now people need to be instructed please don't misunderstand me but he says people need to be reminded more than they need to be instructed consider the Lord Jesus what the Lord Jesus said he does very little at outlining how a church is to operate he does he doesn't say ok you need 18 minutes of worship 43 minutes of preaching you need you need 6 minutes for offering you need he doesn't do this they he doesn't he doesn't lay that out for us but he does say this he says when you gather can you do something can you remember me when you come together can you remember me now if you're thinking to yourself how could I ever forget Jesus like have you ever forgotten the name Jesus have you ever thought oh yeah Jesus ayat what's the cross you you will never forget that but that's not what he's saying he's saying when you gather I want what I did for you on the cross to be at the center of every decision what I want and I'm gonna give you these elements the bread and the wine bread and the wine to remind you my my body was broken and my blood was shed that you might have life just remember that remember I'm coming remember this world's not your home just put your heart and your mind right in the center of that truth just remember that that's what I want you to do if you do that a lot of things will go right let's put them at the center and so Psalm 16:8 I believe highlights the reality that distress makes you functionally forgetful from functional forgetfulness is at the heart of dysfunction and number three here's the third principle is that prayer is the act of setting the Lord before you well what what what are your goals in prayer my gut is that all of you pray to some degree or another but what are you what are you trying to accomplish what what is it the goal what what is the goal of your prayer what are you trying to accomplish well I believe one of the great goals of prayer is to set the Lord always before you it's to take him from out on the peripheral and the margin and to put them front and center who he is verse 8 I have set the Lord always before me because he's at my right hand I will not be shaken and what David is doing here in prayer is that he is exalting in who God is for him he is just in his soul he is just loving who God is from he's remembering who God is from even though his soul feels distress and so how does David set the Lord before him how do you do that if you want to set the Lord before you put him right at the front and center how do you do this well here it is here's the principle that David is thinking and speaking great in true thoughts about God that in his prayer what he does is that he's working hard to think great thoughts about God and it's not great if it's not true and then he's speaking great thoughts about God he's not just making up ideas about God he's not like you know what God I'm very thankful you're very similar to my senile grandpa who just wants me to be happy and you're gonna make me happy he's not just making stuff up about God but he's recalling he's remembering who God is in the midst of his discouragement and in this passage there are seven great thoughts about God I'm just gonna quickly go through each one of them and what I'm doing I hope will be helpful for you in making God central putting setting him right at the center so here they are here they are seven thoughts number one is that God is my refuge God is my refuge verse one protect me God for I take refuge in you now look at the look at how this verse is set up he has a request what's the request protect me preserve me take care of me help me that's the nature of the request now what is David's reasoning he asked David David why do you think God should do that what's the answer for or because I take refuge in you so this is his argument I'm turning to you god I'm not going anywhere else my distress I feel my distress I'm turning right to you so take care of me because I'm making you my refuge I'm all about the phone-a-friend option when you're in trouble I'm all about that you're in trouble phone a friend call your friend I think that's appropriate God wants us to help carry one another's burdens but what I'm not about is skipping the most important person in the equation when phoning a friend excludes God where you just go to all your friends and you talk to your friends to try to find refuge and David David just says you're my refuge you're my refuge you're the one I'm going to and I think what would our church be like if when you felt distress you went to the Lord what our church even be like we'd be much much stronger number two God is my Lord I said to the Lord you are my Lord protect me O God for I take refuge in you I said to the Lord you are my lord what is he doing here he he says I said to the Lord to Yahweh you are my Adonai you're my master he's reestablishing the context for his relationship and he says you you are my lord I said to the Lord you are my lord so simple but I think it is so profound because what he's doing is that he's consciously submitting himself to God that's what he's doing you could say well it's assumed obviously he's the master and I'm a servant duh you could have that attitude but that's not what's going on he says no you I said to the Lord you're my lord you're my master you know I talked to believers all the time or people who say they're believers all the time and they they cannot with a clear conscience say the Lord is my master they can't say that can you say that with their clear conscience can you look at God and say my greatest aim is to trust and obey the Lord Jesus whatever he says I will do don't take that for granted that is a powerful thing in our souls many many people they respond to that question by this question I could do better that's not what David said this is what he says protect me God for I take refuge in you I said to the Lord you know you're the Lord but I could do better it's not what he says no you are my lord I'm underneath you you're in charge of my life I'm not running away from you I'm not making up excuses I'm submitting myself to you and he's not dragging his feet he's not dragging his feet like oh this is horrible I kissed my arm you can twist my arm God twist my arm I guess I'll come to you that's not what happens look at his attitude it's beautiful to me verse 2 I said to the Lord you and my you are my Lord and I have nothing good besides you that's amazing his attitude is you're my Lord and it is so good that you're my lord you are my sovereign you are my master and it's the best thing in the world that you're in charge of my life here's an equation for you okay great health plus money plus Fame plus winning the World Series or whatever accomplishment you want to put in there success plus a great marriage plus healthy kids plus a good reputation God equals what fill in the blank what is that equal to you David knew the answer you know what his answer is I have nothing good apart from God nothing good I if I don't have God I miss everything apart from you I have nothing good he he is just rejoicing that he has God you are my lord I said to the Lord you are my lord and apart from you I have nothing good he is the source of everything good in my life he is putting that truth right there you were the best you're the best thing that ever happened to me number four thought number four there is no hope anywhere else there is no hope anywhere else God is my refuge God is my Lord God is my highest good and there is no hope anywhere else verse 4 says the sorrows of those who take another God for themselves will multiply I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood I will not speak their names with my lips now what is he doing here what he's doing here is he's just acknowledging the reality of the situation where he says I have nowhere else to go I don't even want to go anywhere else because he's concluded about the world that any other God that turning me anything else only will multiply my sorrows so he saw in his distress the best possible thing that's ever happened to me is that the Lord is my lord and if anyone turns anywhere else it will only multiply their sorrows and I will not even pretend to worship them in any way I will have nothing to do with the worship of any other God and what he's doing is what I believe you must learn to do is that he is comparing situate our statuses in life where a person is that so what he's doing is this is because here's here's the way that it works is that you start to compare yourself to other people and you say well that person has this and this person is living life the wrong way but they have all these good things in their life but that won't do for David what David is doing is he's saying okay even if I'm in trouble right now it won't help one bit what whatsoever to go to another god to worship anything else because the worship of anything else will just multiply my sorrows it does absolutely nothing good to try to find refuge and comfort and joy in anything else because there isn't refuge in life and joy and anything else besides God apart from you god I have nothing good at all you know a lot of times now if I'm talking to someone that I know really well and they're sharing with me what's going on in their life they're having marital problems financial problems health problems discipleship problems disappointment issues they'll say this to me they'll say Dan what should I do and sometimes what I'll do is this as I'll say do you ever come and go by your house do you have a high V buy your house you'll say yeah I'll say step 1 go buy a big bottle of vodka and they'll say what or go get some of the sweetleaf or whatever it is and go get it ok step 2 go home get your computer out and start watching YouTube cat videos or if you're above that you can watch Fast and the Furious 1 through 26 or whatever it is okay just now just start binging you got it you got your alcohol and you got your cat videos and then we start laughing because this is what we're saying where else are we gonna go have you ever thought about that like consciously where are you gonna go what are you gonna turn to I mean are you really gonna like cat videos or alcohol I mean do you really it's gonna multiply your sorrows you're gonna go binge watch Netflix where does that end you already know the answer and I say that to just bring up the reality oh yeah when push comes to shove we go to the Lord I mean we always go to the Lord we're all sorry gonna turn he's the source of everything good in my life and David had concluded that every other pursuit for life and joy ends in sorrow have you have you come to that conclusion that every every other pursue the American dream ends in sorrow money if you turn to money ends in sorrow having the best sex you can have ends in sorrow drugs and and sorrow exercise you give yourself to just being the most physically fit person you can that's good and dandy and maybe do that but if you're trying to find life in joy there and Saro if you turn to world of warcraft and even if your rating with your level 110 orc puri warrior or whatever that is best gamer of all time where does it end it ends in sorrow so he's just reminding himself it is so good to be a christian how how in the world do i have you it's just by your grace Lord that I have you in my life number one God is my refuge number two God is my Lord number three God as my height is good number four there is no hope anywhere else number five God is my greatest joy in blessing verse five Lord you're my portion and my cup of blessing you hold my future he just says when I look at everything else all the other options out on the table you're my cup you're my cup of blessing you're my you're what I pick when I look at every everything that I could pick you're what I want you're the source of all that is good you're my greatest joy and blessing look at verse 11 he says you reveal the path of life to me in your presence is abundant joy at your right hand are eternal pleasure Sam he's just knew like I want God I mean do you see God that way as your greatest joy do you see the Lord and being in the presence of the Lord is that the the best thing for your life you know when I was if I'm being honest when I was growing up when I was in high school early college years I remember thinking you know God I think it's good to follow God I believe it's good to follow God but I'm kind of missing out on life because I saw what everyone else was doing I think it's good to follow God I'm kind of missing out on life but the longer I followed the Lord the more I see that God is not he's not withholding anything good from you whatsoever there he is not spirit he is not he's not withholding anything good he's only sparing you so much sorrow and David says it's not only that you're sparing me sorrow you're the source of my life a question I've been asking people lately as this here's the question I was created for fill in the blank what were you created for David enthusiastically answered that question with God period I was created before God I was created to know God to walk with God to loved God to rejoice in God my life is found in God and if you put anything else in that blank I mean think about it what would you put in that blank I was created for what to be popular you were created to live a long time you were created to have nice things what were you created for everything else that you put in there is lacking it's it is horrifically lacking as an explanation the only thing that makes any sense is I was created for God David knew that thought number six God holds my life and will do good to me he says you are Lord you are my portion and my cup of blessing you hold my future he saw God is totally sovereign over every detail of his life and that nothing in his life nothing in his life happened outside of God and he knew that God's intentions towards him were for his good he goes on to say that that sovereignty that God has the sovereignty that he has over your life he uses to produce good in your life that's what he does you know God is a master he's sovereign he's Lord he's in control but he leverages his sovereignty for your highest good that's what he believed verse six says the boundary lines have fallen for me in Pleasant places even though his soul is in turmoil he says what you've done with your sovereignty is bring about good in my life indeed I have a beautiful inheritance what you're gonna do for me not necessarily in this life maybe in this life but ultimately in the next is you will produce my highest good that the power of God sovereignty of God is deserted over you for your good so David said okay whatever's happening I can trust you whatever's happening I know Lord because of your grace towards me will work out for my good if you are in Christ you know as a dad I really love my kids and I've never woken up and thought to myself you know what today I hope one of my kids doesn't tie their shoe I hope they trip on their shoelaces and maybe fall down the steps like I've never thought that like I'm never light in fact I would do the I'm doing the opposite I'm thinking to myself what can I do to give them life in joy but I lack wisdom I lack knowledge and I lack control to give them the highest good but God does not he does not and David knew it this is why the cross is so powerful for us it's so powerful because Jesus is the statement in history that says God intends to do you good the heat he is working for your highest good that if you're in Christ he is not letting your life spin out of control but he is he is exerting his sovereignty over your life to work for your highest good Romans 8 says what then shall we say to these things if God is for us who can be against us think about that if God is for me tell me who can be against me it's we sang he who did not spare his own son but gave him up for us all how will he not also with him graciously give us all things he says do you think God is gonna send his son and then withhold giving you what you need he says he who did not spare his own son the one who gave up his son this is so committed to your highest good that he would give his son to die in your place that you might live his life he will give you whatever you need he's not withholding anything who shall bring any charges against God's elect it is God who justifies who is it to condemn Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that who was raised who was at the right hand of God who indeed is interceding for us who shall separate us from the love of Christ shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or the sword this is what he's saying do you know that all those things will cause you to question God's intentions towards you did you know that all those things tribulation distress persecution or famine nakedness danger of the sword all those things will shake you but what do you go to where do we land we land with if God is for us who can be against us he who did not spare his own son but gave him gave him up for us all how will he not also with him graciously give us all things as it is written for your sake we're being killed all the day long we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered no and all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us for I am sure that neither death nor life nor Angels nor rulers nor things present or things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord Paul knew whatever is happening in my life God is exerting his sovereignty in my life to produce my highest good and there's nothing that's going to stop him thought number seven God is with me therefore I will not be shaken verse seven I will bless the Lord who counsels me even at night when my thoughts troubled me even at night my thoughts are troubling to me I bless Lord who counsels me the Lord is right there with me verse eight I have set the Lord always before me now this is a really important part of the sermon okay so if you have disengaged for a while I would invite you to come back this is the part you need to give I have set the Lord always before me here it is because he's at my right hand now was God not at his right hand before he prayed because he's at my right hand of course God was at his right hand God didn't move because he is at my right hand I will not be shaken it's amazing he set the Lord before him who he is that's what we just went through and he says he's with me he's in the trenches with me he's in there with my despair therefore I will not be shaken in fact he goes up further than that verse 9 therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices my body also rests securely for you will not abandon me to Sheol you will not allow your faithful one to see decay so he moves past this place where as he said I won't be shaken now why won't I be shaken I won't be shaken because he's at my right hand why is he at your right hand because you've just set the Lord right in front of you that's the flow and it does more than just give me confidence it gives me gladness therefore my heart is glad my whole being rejoices my body also rests securely you know as a pastor I often think about well what am I trying to accomplish in you guys like what what am I like is the goal just to preach the Bible or there certain outcomes that I want that God wants me to have for you well here's a big one are you ready my hope for everyone in our church is that we would know how to walk from despair to joy and confidence in God that's what I want you individually you would know by God's grace how to move from despair to joy from despair to confidence in God you would be able to walk that road because you know you know how to set the Lord who the Lord is how to set him right in front of your face so that you can say the Lord is at my right hand therefore I will not be shaken now as you look at verse 1 David is sensing some fear despair there's some turmoil and a soul but here's the question I was thinking about what situation is he in what is the situation that David is in that's causing turmoil well there it is you want to know it's death he's looking at death right in the face and it's one thing to know you're gonna die and it's a completely different thing to look at death in the face some of you have looked at death right in the face and you know it's a different thing to say out we're all gonna die and then it and then to actually look at death in the face and so this is what's causing the turmoil preserve me oh god I take refuge in you preserve save me God that's what he's praying about which begs the next question which is this how can you face death with confidence can you face death with confidence like if you die like DIC deaths deaths knocking what's your heart gonna do how can you face death with confidence would you like the answer you must come back next week I promise I'll tell you in fact I'll tell you tonight though if you want to talk to me out in the hall I'll tell you tonight what David does but it's amazing how he processes through the coming king in the cross of Christ in the resurrection of Jesus and how we can be confident facing death it's amazing what he does just too close to practical things number one set the Lord always before you work hard I would beg you work hard in your prayer life labor to set the Lord in front of you do what David did he wrote it out he wrote out this is what's true about God take the scriptures and put the Lord there and just let your heart think about who he is that should be one of the main goals that we're facing or that we're trying to accomplish so work hard to remember rightly who God is number the other part of that is this is don't take communion for granted don't take communion for granted understand this is what the Lord has given us to try to make him the center this isn't it's not the whole picture but it's something we were to do when we gather when we remember oh yeah you mean Jesus you became sin in my place and you died the death I deserve that I might live the life that you deserve you did that for me I mean just think about that number two is exalt and who God is for us just don't be indifferent if your heart is indifferent towards God and who God is for you your heart needs to be awakened you need your heart to wake up if God is my refuge god is with me he counsels me he loves me he leads me if that doesn't periodically spiri otic ly excite us you need to work on that David is not indifferent towards these truths he is exalting in them but it takes time and energy to put the Lord keep putting the Lord in front of you keep putting the Lord in front of you and just see what he does it's amazing what he'll do in your life let's go ahead go ahead and close Lord Jesus we thank you that you were willing to die for us Lord you are the you Lord Jesus are the ultimate sign of your love for the world there is a statement written in history about the love and holiness of God and it is the cross and in Lord we we want to set you right in front of our eyes but we don't want you to be small and all of our problems big we don't want that we don't want you to be prefer 'el we don't want you to be marginal Lord we want you to be front and center in our lives we want we want you to have your way in us and Lord but we just confess our need for you that you just you need to do something in us that we can't do for ourselves but we need your help I pray that every one of us here we would learn to walk the road from despair to joy in confidence and you help us God to do that we need your grace we need your spirit pray these things in Jesus name [Music] you [Music]
